A MEDICAL JOURNEY
Haematology
Haematology was only covered in Haematology Immunology system block. Lectures were taught by Dr Farzana.
Haematology is the study of the blood and blood-forming tissues. This includes haemostasis and thrombosis, as well as the components and characteristics of blood.
Haematology is used to perform a wide range of laboratory tests to produce and interpret results assisting clinicians in their diagnosis and treatment of diseases, especially diseases that involved the blood.

Immunology
Immunology was only covered in Haematology Immunology system Block. Dr Wong and Dr Priya taught us for immunology.
Immunology is a branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in the human body. It deals with the physiological functioning of the immune system in states of both health and diseases; malfunctions of the immune system in immunological disorders.
For example, autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities, immune deficiency, transplant rejection.

at low atmospheric pressure, the red blood cell will sickle forming sickled cell RBC. the condition is called is sickle cell anemia.

when RBC sickle, the cells are more tacky, hence they stick together blocking the capillaries.

B cells produce antibodies that fight infections

Reflection:
Haematology and Immunology, as the names suggest was only covered in Haematology Immunology system Block. I enjoyed bothe subjects very much, as they are entirely different subjects from the usual six core subjects. I also enjoy lessons by Dr Farzana, Dr Wong and Dr Priya.
Haematology was a heavy subject, we had to first learn how to classify different types of anemias. This includes the pathogenesis, clinical maifestations and morphology of the disease. The challenging part for me is to not mix up the characteristics of different types of anemia, as they are all quite similar to each other. I am grateful that Dr Farzana prepared many online quizzes on Times for us to practise and revise.
Immunology was also one of the tougher subjects in H&I system block. The subject explores the details within the human immune system, both innate and adaptive immune system. The challenge for me was to remember the steps involved in the cellular and humoral defense mechanisms. In the beginning of the semester, I kept mixing up the names of the molecules. However, with added hard work and heklp from Dr Wong I was able to grasp the concepts of the immune system.
I am glad that H&I subjects were taught in the beginning of the second semester as it introduces us to the basis of life -blood. Every system of the body is related to the H&I system, hence I think mastering this subject will help me understand better in other units.
