Practical Sessions

Practical sessions are carried out in Semester 1 and Semester 2. Students are given the opportunity to explore the clinical and practical aspects of each subject. Besides that, we can truly experience "hands on" in the practical lab sessions. Lectures, questions and issues discussed in Practical sessions will be asked in the Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) examinations.

Practical lessons are conducted in the Multi Disciplinary Labs (MDL), Anatomy Labs, Pharmacy Labs and also Anatomy Museum. We are required to follow the proper dress codes when we enter the labs. For instance:

1. Lab coats, button all the way down.

2. Covered shoes

3. Long hair tied

4. Tudung inserted into lab coat

5. Long pants or skirts

6. Gloves and face masks if needed.

Practical sessions are carried out for a few subjects, these includes:

1. Anatomy

2. Physiology

3. Pathology

4. Pharmacology

5. Microbiology

6. Haematology

7. Immunology

Anatomy

Anatomy of the Upper Limb

Location: Anatomy Lab Picture showing me holding a plastinated human body. I am studying about the nerves of the upper arm.

Anatomy of the Lower Limb

Anatomy of the Lower Limb

Location: Anatomy Museum Picture showing the bony structures and surface markings of the left pelvic bone.

Histology

Histology

Picture showing the histology of the human skin. The skin has the epidermis and dermis layer.

Embryology

Embryology

Location: Anatomy Lab Picture showing me holding a plastinated human heart. I am learning about the exterior and blood supplies of the heart.

Physiology

Materials and Apparatus

Materials and Apparatus

Blood typing

Blood typing

Location: MDL Lab Picture showing the pricked finger with a spot of blood.

Antibody and antigen Test

Antibody and antigen Test

Location: MDL Lab Picture showing three sample test. A with agglutination showing presence of antigen. B with less agglutination showing part antigen. C is clear means no antigens.

Pathology

Histopathology

Histopathology

Microscope slide shows a focus of fibroblastic proliferation, close to an area of fibrosis, chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate can be observed. In the subpleural space, honeycombing aspect can be recognized

Recording of data

Recording of data

Picture showing my lab partner Beverly, and I recording the features observed in the microscopic slide.

Slide obsevation

Location: MDL Lab Picture showing me observing a slide under high magnification.

Pathologic Heart specimen

Pathologic Heart specimen

Picture showing a well preseved heart in formalin. The heart suffers from a myocardial infarction. Heart is hypertrophied, the walls are thicker than normal.

Pharmacology

Drug in Syrup form

Drug in Syrup form

Cough medications usually given in syrup or a linctus.

IM and IV drug administration

IM and IV drug administration

Emergency drugs are given intramuscular or intravenously using syringe and needle. Medication are stored in ampules or vials.

Eye drops

Eye drops

Location: MDL Lab Picture showing different types of eye drops used in open angle and closed angle glaucoma treatment.

Vials

Vials

IM and IV medication are stored in vials. Vials have a rubber air tight seal on top, it can be used multiple times.

Microbiology

Slide observation

Slide observation

Location: MDL Lab Picture showing me observing a microscopic slide of bacteria.

Culturing Bacteria

Culturing Bacteria

Location: Pharmacy Lab Picture showing the incorporation of bacteria on a nutrient agar plate using the streaking method. It is done beside a Bunsen burner, which creates an antimicrobial environment.

Parasite

Parasite

Microscopic slide of chinese liver fluke parasite which infects the human liver. It is transmitted when we eat undercooked fish infected with this parasite.

Bacteria

Bacteria

Location: Pharmacy Lab pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria colony on nutrient agar plate. It infects the skin and nails.

Haematology

Microscopic slide

Microscopic slide

Slide showing leukaemia disease of the blood. The blood smear has many leukocytes infiltration.

X-Ray film

X-Ray film

A skull x-ray taken from the side shows typical findings of multiple myeloma and multiple "punched-out" holes. The arrow is pointing at one of the larger holes.

Microscopic slide

Microscopic slide

Slide showing the malignant cancer of the blood. Multiple myeloma

Liver Hemochromatosis

Liver Hemochromatosis

Primary iron overload disorders typically result from genetic mutations, which alter iron homeostasis in the GI tract and liver

Immunology

Apparatus

Apparatus

Pipette and Tips are used for the antibody and antigen testing for immunology.

Lab Results

Lab Results

Location: Pharmacy Lab A cotton ball is placed inside to provide moisture. Three wells are punched in agar plate for each test. The pattern shows diffusion, and formation of antibody-antigen complex.
