A MEDICAL JOURNEY
Microbiology
Microbiology can be defined as the biology of microscopic organisms, or life too small to be seen with the naked eye. We are to use a microscope to view various microoraganisms, many which are diseased-causing bacteria, fungi, parasites and even viruses. Microbiology covers several disciplines, including:
1. virology (study of viruses)
2. bacteriology (study of bacteria)
3. mycology (study of fungi)
4. parasitology (study of parasites).
Each of these disciplines may include but is not limited to studies of infectious disease-causing microorganisms.
We also learn how to culture these microorganisms using different culture medias, for example liquid culture and agar culture. Besides that, we also learn the few techniques to culture cells. A few of them are the streaking and lawn methods.

Reflection:
Microbiology is a interesting subject, especially when it comes to practical lab sessions. There were a lot of information to remember and we were required to apply them in clinical questions. The challenging part was to remember or memorise the 50 over paratise names, mode of transmission and structure. Nevertheless, I am grateful for Dr Wong and Dr Priya for guiding us during our frist semester.
Through this subject, I learnt that microorganisms aren't all bad for you, it is true that I had this preconceived notion that all bacteria or fungi are bad for the human body, but that is not the case. The truth is we have millions and millions of bacteria which forms the natural flora of the body. For example the candida albicans and staphylococcus aureus on the skin surface. When we are healthy, they usually don't cause any damage to us. However, when a person is immuno-compromised, he or she will be infected with the supposingly harmless bacteria and fungi on our body.
Hence, it is important to keep clean and practise good hygiene. I learnt to not only prevent infections of harmful microorganisms, but also totolerate these beneficial microoraganisms that are teeming on my body and around me. I am glad that I was introduced to Microbiology in the foundation years so I have a better understanding on the subbject.
