Pathology

Pathology was only covered in the Cardiovascular block (CVS block). Pathology in CVS focuses on the study of the pathogenesis, etiology,  complications and clinical manifestations of diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

Under Dr Farzana and Dr Mohit's guidance, we were introduced to many diseased of the heart like Infective endocarditis, rheumatic heart disease, heart failure, myocardial infarction etc. Besides that, we were introduced to diseases of the vessels and circulation. For instance, hypertension that leads to artherosclrosis, thrombosis, embolism, haemorrhage and shock. It is a very interesting subject.

Reflection:

Pathology is one of my favourite subjects in the CVS block. I am very fascinated on how diseases are formed or acquired due many causes and risks factors. I think it is very important for me to master this block, as Malaysia has a very high number of heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol cases. It will one of the most common diseases that I will have to treat in future.

Pathology covers the pathohistology of heart or vessel tissues which are diseased. For example, we were taught to indentify the hallmarks of certain diseases microscopically. One of them is the caterpillar cells, only found in heart tissue of a patient with rhuematic heart disease. Besides that, Dr Farzana and Dr Mohit also taught us how to differentiate the heart diseases from one another. For instance, right-sided heart failure and left-sided heart failure. This is crucial for a doctor to diagnose and make an accurate prognosis as well as provide correct treatment.

I am grateful that we are taught pathology in our early years in MBBS. It prepared us for the real medical field that is waiting for us in the future. Learning pathology is important, as many diseases share or contribute to the same signs and symptoms. Hence, it is our duty as future doctors to equip ourselves well before we enter into the clinical years.
